Butter Projects is currently hosting an exchange show with the Philadelphia-based curatorial collective, Grizzly Grizzly. "Writing Lesssons" is a group exhibition inspired by a set of instructions found in the textbook, "Manual of Fundamentals in the Teaching of Handwriting in the Public Schools." I had the opportunity to work with dear friend and artist Mary Smull to create a piece called "Sad Libs," a take on the classic Mad Libs of our childhood. We've re-contextualized the old game to bring humor to the depressing childhood letters, diary entries, and notes from our pasts. As MAD-LIBS is a two-person game – one person collecting words from another, using clues limited to parts of speech – SAD-LIBS initiates intimacy between audience members as well, lightened by the levity of unexpected word-play.
Writing Lessons is up through November 7, 2014 in Royal Oak, Michigan. More information is available here. If you'd like to try your hand at one, download below.
