CDCP x WCDC Present: Lizzee Solomon

Artist Reception: Saturday, March 16th 12:00 pm-3:00pm

On view: March 16th - May 25th, 2024
Gallery hours: Saturdays 12-5pm

Join CDCP and WCDC for our third collaborative show of the season, featuring new work by artist Lizzee Solomon.

I make art that enlivens and captures the imagination. Using a unique blend of mixed media techniques, I create bold portraits of a wide range of subjects, both real and imagined. The vibrant color palette I use is inspired by my experience woodcarving in rural Oaxaca, Mexico. There, I learned how to transform copal tree chunks into alebrijes - brilliantly colored sculptures of wild creatures.

My studio practice is meticulous and tedious at times, fueled by my compulsion to complete visual puzzles, and the desire to work with my hands doing small tasks. I choose to work this way for its unexpected meditative qualities. I am entranced by every nuance of my subjects, creating shapes out of shadows, patterns out of pores, and exaggerating distinctive features.

Each work begins as a drawing, resembling a puzzle. After software processing, I use a CNC laser cutter to fabricate the components using colorful plastic, birch plywood, and adhesive vinyl. After assembling the parts, the whole semi-nightmarish portrait emerges with satisfying textures and juicy colors. Working this way allows me to create artwork for a wider range of collectors. I am a strong believer in art that is accessible, not out-of-reach.

About Lizzee:

Lizzee Solomon was born in New York, NY, and grew up in suburban Chicago, IL. She earned a BFA in Studio Art and Hispanic Studies at Carnegie Mellon University in 2011. Lizzee is based in Pittsburgh and participates in group and solo exhibitions as an artist and curator in the region. In addition to her studio practice, Lizzee is a commercial artist, working with businesses to elevate their products and brands using a combination of new and traditional techniques. Lizzee also has over fifteen years of professional teaching experience, having taught at the Carnegie Museum of Art, TechShop, and Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. She is currently an instructor and Board Member at Protohaven in Wilkinsburg.

Artist Reception: Saturday, December 9th, 12:00pm-3:00pm

On view: December 9th, 2023 - February 24th, 2024
Gallery hours: Saturdays 12-5pm

Black women exist within an unrelenting ecosystem built to convince us that we are insufficient. To persevere, counternarratives that remind us of our humanity are crucial. As a painter and poet, my work exists as a safe harbor for Black women and girls, centering themes such as mental health, systemic oppression, joy, liberatory visions, and power.

I practice mainly in acrylic media but also engage in digital painting, tufting, and laser cutting. What excites me most is ideating new ways to showcase aspects of Black feminine identity outside of the limiting bounds and tropes we often see ourselves defined within; I can depict nudity in ways that are not inherently sexual, beauty in ways not restricted by Eurocentric standards and a deep and emotional personhood that can not be bypassed or erased.

I am most influenced in practice and philosophy by the works of Claudia Rankine, Audre Lorde, Kehinde Wiley, Romare Bearden, Octavia Butler, and Kerry James Marshall. The questions I want to be answered in my work are: what is challenged when Black women are centered unapologetically; and what effect do the societies we live in have on Black women’s capacity for joy, love, peace, and processing trauma?

Pedantic Arts Residency Open Call

Casey Droege Cultural Productions (CDCP) in partnership with Headwater Media is pleased to host a call for applications for the next two rounds of Pedantic Arts Residency. The summer session of Pedantic will run June 8 through July 6, 2024. The winter session will run January 11 through February 8, 2025.

Pedantic is an arts residency that brings together an artist, a curator, and a writer under one roof for a collaborative arts experience. It is a unique invitation to open greater and more cross-disciplinary dialogue within the arts by re-embracing the significant impact that education, study, and structured contemplation can have on artistic output. It is focused on fostering artistic connections rather than production.

CDCP is seeking applicants with practices in either visual art, curating, or arts and culture writing. Individuals working across multiple practices are welcome, though we request you identify one field you are most keen to engage with while participating. Applicants must be non-Pittsburgh residents* and must be available to live in Pittsburgh at the Pedantic apartment for the duration of the program dates.

More about Dinner Bell Mag:

Dinner Bell Magazine is a (weird) food writing publication. It serves as a creative space for anyone to experiment with how they write about food. Dinner Bell Mag uses the theme of food loosely, acknowledging that stories about food are perhaps not about food at all. They publish stories about food that exist outside of the traditional food writing framework.

Dinner Bell Mag strives to highlight work from BIPOC, queer, emerging, and rural contributors. They are an organization founded by white queer people, and operate with anti-racist values. They believe that writing about food can be an expansive, inclusive, and ultimately therapeutic practice.

More about Caldwell:

Caldwell grew up white and socialized female in the American south (North Carolina), and landed in Pittsburgh after bouncing around the US for a bit.  Documentary photography of queer communities in these various locations occupied 15ish years of its life, but more recently Caldwell has turned to beadwork as a primary artistic outlet.  Caldwell is self-taught in the area of the arts,  but their degree in Women's Studies (later Gender Studies) and subsequent learning influences almost all aspects of their art practice.   Other major influences are a deep love of color, assorted mental health struggles, and an internal momentum to try new things.  And, of course, the desire for loads of money almost all artists have thrown at them regularly.  Other fun facts: Caldwell is queer and gender queer as all get out, is great at finding four leaf clovers, is passionate about cheese, and was included in an illustration in Highlights magazine (as an adult).  It currently lives in Lawrenceville with two large black and white dogs Marvin and Valentine.

Tiny Talk with Mak O'Connor

Coming up on Wednesday, April 21st is our Tiny Talk featuring artist Mak O'Connor! We're looking forward to talking with Mak and hearing about her work and process as an artist.

Cost of admission is $5-$20, sliding scale. To attend, you must purchase at smallmallpgh.com. Participants will receive a Zoom link to the event one hour before the event begins.

More about Mak:

Mak O’Connor is an artist, designer, and researcher based in Pittsburgh, PA. With a background in global health and a graduate degree in design science, Mak is drawn to the multidisciplinary potentials of art, design, and health. Interested in how the built environment shapes behavior, she offers her energy towards (re)designing and (re)thinking the built environment to provide humans and our living counterparts with the best possible stage for the performance of life.

Exploring how space-making informs meaning-making, Mak uses paint to illuminate our reciprocal and continuous interactions with the built environment, our living counterparts, and with each other. She is particularly interested in self-destructive behaviours, and more specifically how the limitations of normative expression may fuel self-harm. She thinks about creative expression as rebellion and as a redirection of self-destructive energies. Coming to understand freedom of self-expression as a key factor in healing, she is asking how we might find visceral safety through perceptual emancipation.
